Overview

The United Nations’ global strategy is to empower communities to help themselves and deliver 17 Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. This challenging target is at the heart of the work of many of the estimated 10 million Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) around the world.

The MSc Global Social Development Management with Professional Experience, is designed to develop future managers for social development organisations that are working on this agenda. Skills development is central to the course which includes an international placement providing management experience in this field.

Who is the course for?

This course is aimed at students from any discipline, who are committed to sustainable global development and wish to work in the global social development sector.

This includes people who:

  • are just completing their first degree, who may as yet, have limited fieldwork experience
  • may be working as volunteers already in this or a similar sector aspire to starting their own NGO, charity or social enterprise

Course information

The involvement of NGOs in the design and delivery of this course has ensured that the principles of empowerment, self-determination and partnership underpin the content. Recognising that social development is undertaken in a range of interesting and potentially challenging environments, the course takes 20 months to complete and comprises three phases:

  • The first phase is on campus at Coventry University and focuses on building social development knowledge and management skills and preparing you for your international social development experience.
  • The second phase is your professional experience within a social development organisation which will give you the opportunity to practice your learning from phase one. Further, it will provide you with an opportunity to develop your leadership skills and capabilities in the workplace.
  • The final phase is designed to consolidate all of your learning and professional experience into a final major project.This course utilises individual and group study, practice-based learning and research inspired teaching, with a strong emphasis on group-based activities.

How to register:

Entry requirements

  • Applicants should normally hold a minimum of a 2:2 degree in any discipline or equivalent.
  • Applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in the English language equivalent to IELTS 6.5.
  • Students may be admitted with IELTS 6.0 if they attend and pass a pre-sessional English course, operated by Coventry University, before joining the programme.
  • Applications from students who do not meet with the above entry requirements may be considered, at the discretion of the Course Director.
